Located less than 20 km east of Hội An, Cu Lao Cham is part of the Tân Hiệp commune and consists of 8 islands, with Hon Lao being the largest, covering a total area of 15 km². What Makes Cu Lao Cham Special?
1.1. The Season of Flame Trees (Ngô Đồng Flowers)
Besides its title as the “Sacred Island of Central Vietnam,” Cu Lao Cham is also lovingly referred to by locals and tourists as the “Island of Flame Trees.” During the summer, the flame trees bloom vibrantly, with bright red flowers contrasting against the lush green backdrop of the sea and sky. This spectacle makes the island come alive with freshness and vitality.

Visitors to Cu Lao Cham are always delighted by the sight of the vibrant Ngô Đồng trees. These trees typically bloom around July every year. Ngô Đồng trees are deeply intertwined with the life of the island’s inhabitants. The seeds and bark of the tree are used to make bags, hammocks, sunscreen, and even essential oils used in skincare products for women.
Currently, the Ngô Đồng trees on Cu Lao Cham have been recognized as a Vietnamese heritage tree.
1.2. The Ancient Cham Well
When visiting Cu Lao Cham, you must make a stop at the ancient Cham Well. This is one of the area’s oldest historical landmarks, and it is shrouded in mystic stories and legends.

The Ancient Cham Well, also known as the Xóm Cấm Well, is a vital freshwater source for the residents of Cu Lao Cham. What makes this well unique is that its water never runs dry, even during the dry season. During the hot summer months, when the ground cracks and vegetation wilts, the water in the well remains abundant. Over time, this well has become the soul of the people of Cu Lao.
According to local residents, the water from the Xóm Cấm Well is known to cure seasickness. If visitors to the island feel seasick, drinking water from the well, boiled with local forest leaves, will provide immediate relief.
As with many ancient structures, the Xóm Cấm Well carries its own mystique. It is said that those who drink from the well will soon find the love of their life. Men should drink seven sips, and women should drink nine sips to attract a partner. Additionally, drinking the water is believed to help conceive a child of one’s wishes.
